The rip tide analogy resonates with many leadership teams because the experience is familiar. Effort rises before danger becomes visible.

Inside a lower-middle market business, that rising effort often concentrates in one place: the founder.

At first it appears reasonable. A decision requires context, so the founder joins the discussion. A priority conflict emerges between departments, so the founder resolves it. A customer situation becomes sensitive, so the founder steps in to stabilize the outcome. Each intervention works in the moment. Progress resumes. The organization keeps moving.

Over time, however, a pattern begins to form. Decisions increasingly route upward. Functional leaders wait for confirmation before acting across boundaries. Meetings expand because the person who connects the pieces must be present. Alignment depends less on structure and more on the founder’s availability.

At that point the founder has quietly become the organization’s integration layer.
